The focus of AquaTRAIN is to develop a better understanding of the behaviour and environmental impact, including human health, of geogenic elements, in groundwater and soils in the European Union, and to use novel biotechnological and other techniques to develop protection and remediation strategies.

The research objectives are to determine and develop:

  • chemical speciation & inorganic controls on the mobility in groundwaters and soils
  • microbial controls on mobility in groundwaters and soils
  • the chemical speciation and biochemical processes controlling their uptake in the food chain
  • the chemical speciation and biochemical processes controlling their uptake by humans
  • inorganis-based adaptable technologies for the remediation of groundwaters and soils
  • novel biotechnological remediation technologies for groundwater and soils
  • speciation technologies for the nanoscale characterisation in groundwaters and soils
  • integrate the findings of chemical speciation, biochemical, biogeochemical and project-external studies leading to recommendations for environmental impact assessment and policy arising from these findings.
